- The clutch pedal feels spongy or soft.
- The clutch engages too late or too early.
- The clutch slips.
- The transmission grinds when shifting gears.
- The car shakes or vibrates when starting off in first gear.
A few simple steps you can follow:
1. Look at the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder is usually located on the side of the transmission bell housing. It is a small, cylindrical object with a piston that moves in and out.
2. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder. The master cylinder is located in the engine compartment. It is a larger, cylindrical object with a reservoir of brake fluid.
3. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system if you are not completely sure if the level is correct.
If the fluid level is low, add some brake fluid to the reservoir. If the fluid level is correct, bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
1. Start with ensuring that the vehicle is on a level surface and the ignition switch is off.
2. Open the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder.
3. Press down on the clutch pedal until the fluid stops coming out of the bleeder screw.
4. Close the bleeder screw and release the clutch pedal.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the fluid coming out of the bleeder screw is free of air bubbles.
6. Check the clutch pedal feel and the operation of the clutch system.
