Turbochargers are essential to providing sufficient torque, throttle response, and increased MPG on your Caterpillar C15 diesel engine. They work by adding that needed “pep” in an otherwise lazy diesel engine. But what happens when a turbocharger fails? How can you tell? And what can you do to prevent a C15 turbocharger problem?
DFI is committed to helping you keep your CAT C15 diesel turbocharger engine in tip-top running condition. We will be answering the questions stated above plus many more in this post. The faster you get turbocharger issues on your Caterpillar engine resolved, the better.
Like any other diesel turbocharger, there are several things that must work in perfect harmony to provide the necessary benefit you’ve come to know and expect from a diesel engine. However, it is a mechanical part, and problems will eventually occur. Even if you maintain your engine and turbocharger regularly, time will take a toll.
Here are some of the most common failure symptoms associated with a defective CAT C15 turbocharger system. Keep in mind that these are just the most common and there could be other issues not listed on this list.
The turbocharger system works by forcing in extra air for combustion. A sudden loss of power may mean that your turbocharger or its components may or are about to fail. Check for potential issues as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
Does your CAT C15 engine not seem as powerful as it once was? Has it lost its initial acceleration? It could be that the turbocharger is to blame. As previously mentioned, modern turbocharger systems are extremely complicated. Even the smallest issues can cause big problems, and that also goes for the Caterpillar C15’s turbo.
We all love the sound of a spooling turbo. But, an increase in the pitch or whistle of the turbocharger may be its way of telling you that something is wrong. Anyone who is around the CAT C15 engine daily will notice the difference between a healthy and failing turbocharger.
Diesel engines are known for producing heavy black smoke, especially while under load. Your CAT C15 engine is no different. However, excessive smoke is never a good sign, even if you you do not have the original emissions equipment in use.
The diesel engine has come a long way since its invention. It is now cleaner, produces more horsepower, and uses less fuel than ever before. Unfortunately, nothing is made to be perfect, and oil consumption is a problem for older or “well-used” engines.
Like any other turbo system, the turbocharger on a CAT C15 engine is affected by boost leaks, worn-out or failed bearings, foreign matter in the compressor or turbine side.
Each turbocharger system has its own set of pros and cons, positive and negative points. The C15 is no different, and we’ll show you what causes the most common issues found on this particular make and model.
If not properly maintained, carbon deposits from diesel engines can end up making their way inside the compressor side of the turbocharger. If this happens, it can cause major issues with the compressor housing of the turbo.
Damaged compressor/turbine blades, shaft, or even worn-out bearings could cause oil leaks. Engine oil is meant to lubricate and cool vital turbocharger components on the C15, and should at no time make its way into the compressor or turbine side of the turbocharger.
Installing a new turbocharger can be fairly simple if you know what you are doing. We recommend going to a professional if engine work is not your line of expertise. Head on down to our shop located in Bay City, Michigan: 1800 South Wenona St., Bay City, MI 48706!
Maintenance is key if you want to keep your CAT C15 turbocharger running smoothly and as long as possible. Sometimes, the damage and/or wear is beyond repair and is better to swap the entire turbocharger. When that time comes, DFI is here to help get you back up and running in no time.
We make sure the little details such as having the turbocharger pre-lubed and ready for its startups is what sets us out from the competition.
