1. Locate the idle speed adjusting screw. On the 2001 Subaru Forester, it is located on the throttle body.
2. If needed, clean the throttle body and ensure it is functioning correctly.
3. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.
4. Turn the idle speed adjusting screw clockwise to increase the idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it.
5. Adjust the idle speed until it reaches the recommended setting. The factory recommended idle speed for a 2001 Subaru Forester is 750 ± 50 RPM.
6. Once the desired idle speed is achieved, turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the ECU to adjust to the new setting.
7. Confirm the idle speed is stable and within recommended limits.
Note: If you do not feel comfortable making these adjustments yourself, you can always take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic to adjust the idle speed for you.
