Replacing the Water Pump on a 1994 Saturn SL1

Parts needed::

- New water pump

- Thermostat (optional, but recommended)

- Coolant

- Distilled water

- Anti-freeze

- Wrench set

- Pliers

- Screwdriver

- Bucket

Instructions:

1. Make sure the vehicle is cool. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid electrical shocks.

2. Drain the coolant into the bucket. Remove the radiator cap and loosen the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator.

3. Remove the fan belt. Remove the alternator and power steering pump belts by using a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley bolts.

4. Remove the old water pump by using a wrench to loosen the bolts holding it in place.

5. Clean the water pump mating surfaces on the engine and gasket area. Remove any old sealant or gaskets.

6. Install a new gasket and place the new water pump in place. Secure it with the bolts and tighten them in a crisscross pattern.

7. Reinstall the fan belt. Reconnect the alternator and power steering pump belts and tighten the tensioner pulley bolts.

8. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Mix the coolant with the distilled water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

9. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the coolant. Check the coolant level in the radiator and add more if needed.

10. Test the heating system to ensure it is working properly. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

*Note:* If you are not comfortable performing this task, it is recommended to have the water pump replaced by a qualified mechanic.
