Tools and Materials:
- Replacement fuel filter (Motorcraft FG1100 or equivalent)
- Fuel line disconnect tool (lisle 39180 or equivalent)
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Pliers
- Shop rags
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Funnel
Instructions:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool down completely.
2. Apply the parking brake.
2. Locate the fuel filter. It is usually located under the vehicle, near the fuel tank.
3. Place a shop rag under the fuel filter to catch any spilled fuel.
4. Use the fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter. Be careful not to spill any fuel.
5. Remove the old fuel filter by turning it counterclockwise.
6. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the O-rings of the new fuel filter.
7. Screw the new fuel filter into the fuel line fitting until it is snug.
8. Reattach the fuel lines to the fuel filter.
9. Start the engine and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the fuel line connections until the leaks stop.
Tips:
- When disconnecting the fuel lines, be careful not to get fuel on your skin or in your eyes. Fuel is flammable, so it is important to take precautions to avoid any accidents.
- If you spill any fuel, clean it up immediately with a shop rag.
- Do not smoke or use any open flames near the vehicle while you are working on the fuel system.
- If you are not comfortable working on the fuel system, you can have a qualified mechanic perform the fuel filter replacement for you.
