- Spark plug socket wrench
- Spark plug gap gauge (0.82mm)
- New spark plugs (16)
- Compressed air
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket wrench
Procedure:
Step 1: Preparations:
- Park the vehicle on a flat surface and allow the engine to cool down completely.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using the 10mm socket wrench.
Step 2: Remove the Ignition Coils:
- Use the spark plug socket wrench to loosen and remove the four bolts that hold down the ignition coils.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
- Remove the ignition coils carefully to avoid damaging the spark plugs.
Step 3: Remove the Spark Plugs:
- Use the spark plug socket wrench to loosen and remove the spark plugs from the engine block.
- Be careful not to drop any dirt or debris into the spark plug wells.
Step 4: Clean the Spark Plug Wells:
- Use compressed air to clean any debris from the spark plug wells.
Step 5: Check Spark Plugs:
- Inspect the removed spark plugs for any signs of damage, wear, or fouling.
- Compare them to the new spark plugs to assess their condition.
Step 6: Gap Spark Plugs:
- If necessary, adjust the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode using the spark plug gap gauge. The gap should be 0.82 mm.
Step 7: Install Spark Plugs:
- Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the spark plugs to prevent any issues with removal.
- Carefully thread the spark plugs back into the engine block.
- Hand tighten as much as you can, being careful not to over tighten by hand.
- Use the spark plug wrench to tighten the spark plugs securely. Do not over tighten.
Step 8: Reinstall the Ignition Coils:
- Reinstall the ignition coils ensuring they are properly seated.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors.
- Tighten the ignition coil bolts.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Step 10: Start the Engine and Check:
- Start the vehicle. Test the engine for any abnormalities.
- If the engine is running smoothly, that means the spark plug change was successful.
Remember, if you are not confident or comfortable performing this task, it's best to take your car to a professional mechanic. Incorrectly gapping or tightening spark plugs could cause engine damage.
