* Timing light
* Socket wrench set
* Feeler gauge
* Spark plug wrench
1. Locate the timing marks. The timing marks are located on the front of the engine. The crankshaft timing mark is a small notch on the harmonic balancer. The camshaft timing mark is a small dot on the timing gear.
2. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose. The vacuum advance hose is connected to the distributor. Disconnect the hose and plug the vacuum port on the distributor.
3. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt. The distributor hold-down bolt is located at the base of the distributor. Loosen the bolt but do not remove it.
4. Turn the engine until the crankshaft timing mark aligns with the 0-degree mark on the timing scale. You can do this by hand or by using a socket wrench to turn the crankshaft pulley bolt.
5. Insert the feeler gauge between the distributor cap and the distributor housing. The feeler gauge should be .050 inches thick.
6. Rotate the distributor until the points just begin to open. You can do this by hand or by using a socket wrench to turn the distributor.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Reconnect the vacuum advance hose.
The timing should now be set to 10 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). You can verify the timing by using a timing light. Point the timing light at the crankshaft timing mark and pull the trigger. The timing mark should be aligned with the 10-degree mark on the timing scale.
If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 4-7 until the timing is set correctly.
