Before starting any work, make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and the engine is off.
Materials:
- New fuel pump
- Fuel filter
- Gas tank with unleaded fuel
- Flat head screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Socket set
- Wrench
- Rags
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Step 1: Remove the fuel tank
- Locate the fuel tank under the rear of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector from the fuel tank.
- Support the fuel tank with a jack or jack stands.
- Remove the mounting bolts and lower the fuel tank.
Step 2: Remove the fuel filter
- Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
- Remove the mounting bolts and remove the fuel filter.
Step 3: Remove the fuel pump
- Remove the access cover from the fuel pump.
- Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump.
- Remove the mounting bolts and remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank.
Step 4: Install the new fuel pump
- Place the new fuel pump into the fuel tank and secure it with the mounting bolts.
- Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel pump.
- Install a new O-ring on the access cover and attach it to the fuel pump.
Step 5: Install the new fuel filter
- Place the new fuel filter in position and connect the fuel lines.
- Secure the fuel filter with the mounting bolts.
Step 6: Reinstall the fuel tank
- Raise the fuel tank into position and secure it with the mounting bolts.
- Reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector to the fuel tank.
- Make sure the filler neck is properly connected.
Step 7: Prime the fuel system
- Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position but do not start the engine.
- Wait for the fuel pump to run for a few seconds, then turn the key to the "OFF" position.
- Repeat this step several times until you can hear the fuel pump priming the fuel system.
Step 8: Start the engine
- Turn the ignition key to the "START" position and start the engine.
- Let the engine run for a few minutes to allow the fuel system to pressurize.
Step 9: Check for leaks
- Inspect the fuel lines, connections, and fuel tank for leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the connections or replace the faulty components.
Tips:
- Be careful when working with gasoline, as it is flammable.
- Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel system.
- If you spill gasoline on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.
- If you get gasoline in your eyes, rinse them with water for several minutes and seek medical attention.
