Tools and Materials:
- New Ignition switch
- Torx screwdriver set
- Pry tool or flat-headed screwdriver
- Socket set
- Wrench
Steps:
1. Disconnect the Battery:
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery. This will prevent any electrical accidents while working on the ignition switch.
2. Remove Steering Wheel:
- Turn the steering wheel so the Mercedes logo is facing upwards.
- Locate the two Torx screws on the back of the steering wheel near the top spokes.
- Remove these screws and carefully pry off the steering wheel airbag module using the pry tool or a flat-headed screwdriver. Be cautious not to damage any wiring.
- Detach the electrical connectors behind the airbag module and remove the airbag.
- Using a Torx screwdriver, remove the steering wheel bolts and carefully pull the steering wheel towards you to detach it from the steering shaft.
- Remove the steering wheel.
3. Remove Ignition Lock Cover:
- Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
- Locate the small hole on the lower left side of the ignition switch housing.
- Insert the key into this hole and turn it clockwise. This should release the ignition lock cover.
- Remove the ignition lock cover by carefully prying it off.
4. Disconnect Electrical Connectors:
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch. These may include a multi-plug connector and a separate wire connector.
5. Remove the Ignition Switch:
- Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the ignition switch in place.
- Carefully remove the ignition switch from its housing.
6. Installation:
- Insert the new ignition switch into the housing and secure it with the Torx screws you removed in the previous step.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors that you disconnected earlier.
7. Reassemble:
- Reinstall the ignition lock cover and turn the key counterclockwise to lock it in place.
- Reattach the steering wheel by aligning it with the steering shaft and tightening the Torx bolts.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors behind the airbag module.
- Place the airbag module back into position and reinstall the Torx screws that hold it in place.
8. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Test the new ignition switch by turning the key and ensuring that the vehicle starts properly. If everything seems to be working correctly, you have successfully replaced the ignition switch.
