1. Park your car in a safe, well-lit area and apply the parking brake.
2. Locate the taillight assembly that contains the brake light bulb. It is located on the side of the vehicle near the rear.
3. Open the trunk and remove the carpet or lining to expose the inside of the taillight assembly.
4. Locate the brake light bulb socket. It is usually a twist or bayonet-style socket.
5. Turn the socket counterclockwise to unlock it and remove it from the taillight assembly.
6. Remove the old brake light bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
7. Install the new brake light bulb by pushing it into the socket until it clicks into place.
8. Reinsert the socket into the taillight assembly and turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
9. Replace the carpet or lining in the trunk.
10. Test the brake light to make sure it is working properly.
Here are some additional tips for replacing the brake light bulb on a 1999 Volkswagen Passat:
* Make sure you have the correct replacement bulb before you begin. The correct bulb size is printed on the old bulb.
* If the brake light bulb does not work after you replace it, check the fuse for the brake light circuit. The fuse box is located under the hood of the car.
