How do you tighten a fan belt on 1971 volkswagen beetle?

To tighten the fan belt on a 1971 Volkswagen Beetle, you will need the following tools:

- 13mm wrench

- 19mm wrench

- Flat-blade screwdriver

- Small hammer

Procedure:

1.) loosen the three bolts on the pulley (pulley nut and two bolts) holding the fan and generator.

2.) Place a wrench between the engine and generator, then move the generator out to tighten or in to loosen the fan belt. Once the belt is correctly tensioned, tighten the three 13 mm nuts.

To test the belt tension, use the screwdriver and small hammer to deflect the belt halfway between the crank and generator. If the belt deflects 3/8 inch. to 1/2 inch, the tension is correct. If it deflects less, tighten belt, if it deflects more loosen belt.
