Why car smells like gasoline when running?

A car smelling strongly of gasoline when running usually indicates a problem, and shouldn't be ignored. Here are some of the most common causes:

* Fuel Leak: This is the most serious possibility. A leak can be anywhere in the fuel system, from the tank to the injectors. Leaks can be small and hard to spot, but the smell is a clear warning sign. This needs immediate professional attention.

* Faulty Fuel Injectors: If the injectors are leaking or spraying fuel improperly, unburnt fuel can escape into the engine bay and create a strong gasoline odor.

* Loose or Damaged Fuel Lines/Connections: Cracks, loose clamps, or damaged hoses anywhere in the fuel system can allow gasoline to escape.

* Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Problems: This system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. A leak or malfunction in this system can release gasoline fumes. A diagnostic check is needed to pinpoint the EVAP system issue.

* Improper Fuel Cap: A loose or damaged gas cap won't seal properly, allowing fuel vapors to escape. While less serious than other causes, a faulty gas cap can still trigger a check engine light.

* Running Rich: The engine may be running "rich," meaning it's getting too much fuel. This can be due to various issues, such as a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, or other components in the engine's control system. This will often also lead to other performance issues, such as reduced fuel economy and poor acceleration.

What to Do:

Do *not* continue driving if your car smells strongly of gasoline. The risk of fire is significant. Instead:

1. Turn off the engine immediately.

2. Park the car in a well-ventilated area, away from any ignition sources.

3. Have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. They will be able to diagnose the source of the leak or malfunction.

Ignoring a strong gasoline smell is dangerous. Get it checked out promptly to prevent a potentially serious situation.
