2. Remove the points cover. This is located on the left side of the engine, just below the cylinder head. There are two screws that hold it in place. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws, and then lift the cover off.
3. Locate the points. The points are located inside the cover, on a small metal plate. There are two points, one fixed and one movable.
4. Check the points gap. The points gap is the distance between the fixed and movable points. It should be between 0.018 and 0.022 inches. To check the gap, use a feeler gauge. Insert the feeler gauge between the points, and make sure that it fits snugly. If the gap is too large or too small, you will need to adjust it.
5. Adjust the points gap. To adjust the points gap, loosen the screw that holds the movable point in place. Then, use a screwdriver to turn the movable point until the gap is correct. Once the gap is correct, tighten the screw.
6. Reinstall the points cover. Once the points gap is adjusted, reinstall the points cover. Make sure that the screws are tightened securely.
7. Reinstall the spark plug wire. Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug, and then push it down until it clicks into place.
Your points are now changed.
