On the Subaru Legacy, the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located on the rear of the transmission, near the passenger-side axle. It is a small, cylindrical sensor with a single electrical connector.
VSS Removal and Installation
To remove the VSS, you will need a 10mm socket and a ratchet.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the VSS.
2. Use the 10mm socket to remove the two bolts that hold the VSS in place.
3. Remove the VSS from the transmission.
To install the new VSS, simply reverse the removal procedure.
VSS Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing problems with your vehicle's speedometer or odometer, the VSS may be the cause. Here are some tips for troubleshooting the VSS:
* Check the electrical connection. Make sure that the electrical connector is securely plugged into the VSS. If the connector is loose, it can cause the VSS to malfunction.
* Inspect the VSS for damage. Look for any visible damage to the VSS, such as cracks or dents. If the VSS is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
* Test the VSS. You can test the VSS using a multimeter. If the VSS is not producing a signal, it will need to be replaced.
