1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Chock the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
3. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels, but do not remove them completely.
4. Jack up the rear of the vehicle until the wheels are off the ground.
5. Support the vehicle with jack stands.
6. Remove the lug nuts and wheels.
7. Remove the brake drum dust cover.
8. Use a screwdriver or pry bar to pry the brake shoes away from the brake drum.
9. Remove the brake shoes.
10. Remove the brake drum.
When removing the brake drum, it is important to use caution and not to damage the brake shoes or the brake drum itself. If the brake drum is stuck, it may be necessary to use a hammer and chisel to break it loose.
Once the brake drum is removed, you can inspect the brake shoes and the brake drum for wear and damage. If the brake shoes are worn down to the metal backing, they must be replaced. If the brake drum is scored or damaged, it must also be replaced.
