Before you begin, ensure that you have all the necessary tools, including but not limited to:
- A set of wrenches
- A socket set
- A screwdriver set
- An oil filter wrench
- A new oil pump
- A new oil pump gasket
- A new oil filter
- New engine oil
Step 1: Prepare your Vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical accidents.
- Allow the engine to cool completely to prevent burns.
- Park the car on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels.
- Place an oil drain pan under the engine to collect any leaking oil.
Step 2: Remove the Oil Pan
- Locate the oil pan beneath the engine. It's usually a large, metal pan that holds the engine's oil.
- Remove the oil drain plug to let the oil drain into the oil pan you placed underneath.
- Once drained, remove the bolts or screws holding the oil pan in place. Be careful not to spill any remaining oil.
Step 3: Locate the Oil Pump
- Once the oil pan is removed, you should be able to see the oil pump. It's usually located on the side of the engine block.
Step 4: Remove the Old Oil Pump
- Disconnect the oil lines or tubes connected to the oil pump.
- Remove the bolts or screws holding the oil pump in place. Be mindful of any gaskets that may come off with the pump.
Step 5: Install the New Oil Pump
- Place the new oil pump gasket onto the engine block, ensuring it's properly seated.
- Secure the new oil pump using the bolts or screws you removed earlier. Tighten them firmly but do not overtighten.
Step 6: Reattach the Oil Lines or Tubes
-Reconnect the oil lines or tubes that you disconnected earlier to the new oil pump. Ensure that they are properly connected and secure.
Step 7: Replace the Oil Pan
- Reposition the oil pan and secure it with the bolts or screws you removed. Tighten them firmly.
Step 8: Add New Engine Oil
- Remove the oil filter and dispose of it properly.
- Install a new oil filter and hand-tighten it until snug.
- Refill the engine with new engine oil of the recommended type and quantity as specified in your car's owner's manual.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery that you disconnected earlier.
Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check underneath the car for any oil leaks. If you notice any leaks, turn off the engine and recheck your connections.
Step 11: Inspect Oil Level
- Use the dipstick to check the engine oil level. Ensure it is between the "full" and "add" marks.
Remember that replacing an oil pump can be a complex task, and it's recommended that you consult your vehicle's repair manual or seek assistance from a professional mechanic if you're not comfortable performing this task yourself. Always follow the specific instructions and safety precautions for your Saab 900s model.
