To Remove Starter on a 1985 Harley:

Safety Precautions:

Tools Required:

- Screwdriver sets (Phillips and flathead)

- 5/16" socket wrench and ratchet

- ½” socket wrench and ratchet

- Wire cutters and/or electrical crimp tool

- Safety goggles

Removal Steps:

1. Loosen the Starter Cable Nut:

- Locate the starter cable connected to the starter solenoid.

- Use the 5/16" socket wrench to loosen the nut holding the cable in place.

2. Remove the Cable Nut:

- Once loosened, remove the cable nut completely by hand.

- Disconnect the cable from the solenoid.

3. Disconnect the Starter Solenoid Wires:

- Look for the wires connected to the starter solenoid. There might be two or three depending on your bike model.

- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry open the wire connectors and separate the wires from the solenoid terminals.

4. Remove the Bolt Holding the Starter:

- Locate the bolt that secures the starter to the engine casing. It is usually a ½" bolt.

- Use the ½” socket wrench and ratchet to remove the bolt.

5. Remove the Starter:

- Once the bolt is removed, carefully lift the starter off the engine casing and out of the motorcycle.

- Be mindful of any gaskets, seals, or spacers that might be attached to the starter.

Reinstallation:

When reinstalling, follow the steps in reverse order. Make sure to reconnect the cables and wires properly and reinstall the bolt securely. Do not forget to reconnect the battery terminal.

Remember to take safety precautions and double-check all connections before operating your motorcycle. If you encounter any difficulties, it's best to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic to avoid any potential damage.
