Tools and materials needed:
- Replacement starter motor
- Socket wrench set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Gasket maker (optional)
Procedure:
1. Locate the starter motor. It is usually located on the right side of the motorcycle, near the bottom of the engine.
2. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution to prevent any electrical accidents while working on the starter motor. Remove the negative terminal (black cable) from the battery.
3. Remove the starter motor cover. There are usually a few screws or bolts holding the cover in place. Remove them using a socket wrench.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter motor. There will be two electrical connectors attached to the starter motor: the solenoid connector and the power connector. Disconnect them by pressing on the release tabs and pulling the connectors off.
5. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts. There are usually two or three bolts holding the starter motor in place. Remove them using a socket wrench.
6. Remove the starter motor. Once the mounting bolts are removed, the starter motor should come out easily. If it doesn't, use a flathead screwdriver to pry it out.
7. Inspect the starter motor and gasket. If the starter motor is damaged or the gasket is worn, replace them. Apply gasket maker to the gasket surface before installing it.
8. Install the new starter motor. Place the new starter motor in the mounting location and secure it with the mounting bolts.
9. Reconnect the electrical connectors. Reconnect the solenoid connector and the power connector to the starter motor.
10. Reattach the starter motor cover. Secure the cover with the removed bolts or screws.
11. Reconnect the battery. Reconnect the negative terminal (black cable) to the battery.
12. Test the starter motor. Turn on the ignition and press the starter button. The starter motor should engage and start the engine.
13. Take the motorcycle for a test ride. Make sure the starter motor is working properly by taking the motorcycle for a short test ride.
Note: If you are uncomfortable performing these steps, it is recommended to have the starter motor replaced by a qualified mechanic.
