Location 1: Underhood Fuse/Relay Box
This is the most common location.
1. Locate the Fuse/Relay Box: Open the hood and find the fuse and relay box. It's typically located near the battery, often on the driver's side fender well.
2. Identify the Starter Relay: The box should have a diagram showing the location of each relay. Look for one labeled "starter," "STR," or a similar designation. Sometimes the diagram uses symbols instead of text. The relay itself is usually a smaller, square component.
3. Remove the Relay: Most relays are held in place by pressure. Gently but firmly pull the relay straight out of its socket. Take note of its position and orientation; sometimes there's a slight notch or marking to indicate correct installation.
4. Install the New Relay: Push the new relay into the socket, ensuring it's seated correctly.
5. Test: Try starting the truck.
Location 2: Inside the Cab (Less Common)
In some rare cases, the starter relay might be located inside the cab's fuse box, usually under the dashboard. If you can't find it under the hood, check here. The process is similar: locate it using the diagram, pull it out, and install the new one.
Important Considerations:
* Diagram: Always refer to the diagram inside the fuse box cover. This is crucial to ensure you're replacing the correct relay.
* Relay Type: Make sure you purchase the correct replacement relay. Check the part number on the old relay before buying a new one, or take the old relay to an auto parts store for matching. They often have a cross-reference system.
* Battery Voltage: Verify your battery is properly charged. A weak battery can cause starting problems, masking a faulty relay issue.
* Other Potential Problems: If replacing the relay doesn't solve the starting problem, the issue could be the starter motor itself, the ignition switch, the neutral safety switch, or a wiring problem.
If you're uncomfortable working with car electrical systems, it's best to take your Ranger to a qualified mechanic. Improperly handling electrical components can lead to damage or injury.
