When Do I Need to Change My Car’s Air Filter?

Your car, truck, utility vehicle, or van has an air filter and two or three other filters that need to be changed regularly. The best way to tell when these filters need to be changed is to check your owner’s manual for the specific recommendations by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Meadows Automotive can change all of your filters when they need it. Here are the general recommendations for each filter in your automobile.

Air Filter Service

The air filter that is located in the engine needs to be changed annually or every 12,000 miles. This filter makes sure that the air flowing through the engine is cleaned of contaminants, dirt, and debris. Eventually, the very things that it clears from the air will clog it, and you will notice vehicle performance issues such as acceleration lag and a sputtering engine.

Cabin Filter Service

The air filter that is located in the cabin needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. This filter is responsible for ensuring that the air blowing through the vents is clean of contaminants, dirt, debris, and vehicle exhaust. When this filter clogs, driving your automobile might actually make you sick. You may feel sluggish behind the wheel, get headaches, or otherwise feel as if you have the flu.

Fuel Filter Service

The fuel filter located in the fuel system needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. If you don’t put a lot of miles on your automobile annually, make sure to change the fuel filter every two years. This filter purifies the diesel fuel or gasoline in your vehicle twice. It’s necessary to make sure that there are no contaminants or sediment in the gasoline once it is sprayed into the combustion chamber by the fuel injectors. A clogged fuel filter will create the same engine performance issues as a clogged air filter does.

Oil Filter Service

Finally, changing the oil filter is part of a regular oil change service. This filter makes sure that the oil is always clean as it circulates through your engine. If you are faithful about your oil changes, your oil filter should never clog. If it does, your oil will have difficulty circulating through the engine and the engine will overheat. An engine with little to no oil can also be seriously damaged in less than 30 minutes.

As we said above, Meadows Automotive in Waterford Township, MI, would be happy to change all of your vehicle’s filters when they need it. You can call us to schedule an appointment.
