How do you replace the water pump on a 1997 Chevy Malibu 2.4L 4 cylinder?

1. Disconnect the battery.

- This will help to prevent any electrical accidents while you are working on the car.

2. Drain the coolant.

- Open the radiator drain plug and drain the coolant into a pan.

- Be careful not to spill any coolant on the ground, as it can be harmful to the environment.

3. Remove the serpentine belt.

- Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and then remove the belt from the pulleys

4. Remove the water pump bolts.

- There are four bolts that hold the water pump in place.

- Remove these bolts using a wrench.

5. Remove the old water pump.

- Once the bolts are removed, you can pull the water pump off the engine.

- Be careful not to damage the gasket between the water pump and the engine.

6. Clean the gasket surface on the engine block.

- You can use a gasket scraper or a wire brush to clean the gasket surface.

- Make sure that the surface is clean and free of any debris.

7. Install a new gasket.

- Place a new gasket on the gasket surface on the engine block.

- Make sure that the gasket is properly seated.

8. Install the new water pump.

- Align the new water pump with the gasket surface and the bolt holes.

- Install the four bolts and tighten them until they are snug.

9. Reinstall the serpentine belt.

- Insert the belt into the grooves of the pulleys, and then tighten the tensioner pulley bolt until the belt is tight.

10. Refill the coolant.

- Open the radiator cap and fill it with coolant until it reaches the “Full” mark.

- Be sure to use a coolant that is specifically designed for your vehicle.

11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

- Let the engine run for a few minutes and check for any leaks around the water pump.

- If you see any leaks, stop the engine and tighten the bolts until the leaks are gone.
