Tools and Materials Needed:
- New washer pump
- Socket set
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Towel
- Funnel
- Windshield washer fluid
1. Safety First: Put on your safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself while working.
2. Locate the Washer Fluid Reservoir: Open the hood of your Pontiac Grand Prix and look for the washer fluid reservoir. It's usually a translucent plastic container located near the front of the engine compartment.
3. Remove the Washer Fluid: Use a towel to catch any spills and remove the cap from the reservoir. Use the funnel to drain most of the washer fluid from the reservoir.
4. Disconnect the Electrical Connection: Locate the electrical connector attached to the washer pump. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight up to disconnect the electrical connection.
5. Disconnect the Washer Hoses: Use the pliers to gently squeeze and disconnect the hoses connected to the washer pump. There might be two hoses, one for the front washer and one for the rear washer (if equipped). Be prepared for some residual washer fluid to leak out when disconnecting the hoses.
6. Remove the Washer Pump: Use the screwdriver to remove the screws or bolts that secure the washer pump to the reservoir. Once the pump is loose, gently lift it out of the reservoir.
7. Install the New Washer Pump: Place the new washer pump into the reservoir and align the mounting holes. Secure the pump using the screws or bolts you removed earlier.
8. Reconnect the Washer Hoses: Reattach the washer hoses to the new pump. Make sure they are firmly connected and there are no leaks.
9. Reconnect the Electrical Connection: Plug the electrical connector back into the washer pump. Press firmly to ensure it is securely connected.
10. Refill the Washer Fluid Reservoir: Use the funnel to carefully pour new windshield washer fluid into the reservoir until it reaches the marked "Full" line.
11. Test the Washer Pump: Turn on the ignition and activate the windshield washer. Check that the washer fluid sprays correctly through the washer nozzles on the hood. If the washer fluid does not spray, check for any issues with the electrical connection, hoses, or pump placement.
12. Clean Up: Clean any spilled washer fluid and close the hood of your Pontiac Grand Prix.
Remember, if you are not comfortable performing this task or encounter any issues, it's best to consult with a qualified mechanic or refer to the vehicle's repair manual for specific instructions.
