1. Prepare the car. Engage the parking brake. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Drain the oil from the engine.
2. Remove the oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter and remove it from the engine.
3. Remove the valve cover. Use a socket wrench and ratchet to remove the bolts holding the valve cover in place. Remove the valve cover and gasket from the engine.
4. Locate the lifter. The lifters are located in the cylinder head. They are small, cylindrical-shaped parts that are located between the camshaft and the valves.
5. Remove the lifter. Use a screwdriver to pry the lifter out of its bore. Be careful not to damage the lifter or the bore.
6. Install the new lifter. Place the new lifter in the bore. Use a socket wrench and ratchet to tighten the lifter bolt.
7. Reinstall the valve cover. Replace the valve cover gasket and reinstall the valve cover. Tighten the bolts holding the valve cover in place.
8. Reinstall the oil filter. Apply a thin coat of oil to the new oil filter gasket and screw it onto the engine. Tighten the oil filter with an oil filter wrench.
9. Add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in the owner's manual.
10. Reconnect the negative terminal. Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery.
