Tools and Materials:
- Wrenches and Sockets
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Chisel and Hammer (if necessary)
- Sealant
- New Ring Gear and Pinion Shaft (with bearings and seals)
- New Differential Fluid
Procedure:
1. Prepare the Vehicle:
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Chock the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Raise the rear of the vehicle using jack stands or a lift.
- Remove the rear wheels.
2. Disconnect the Driveshaft:
- Locate the driveshaft connected to the differential.
- Remove the bolts securing the driveshaft flange to the differential flange.
- Slide the driveshaft out carefully.
3. Remove the Differential Cover:
- Locate the differential cover on the rear axle.
- Remove the bolts securing the differential cover and carefully pry it off.
- Be ready to catch any residual differential fluid that may spill.
4. Remove the Pinion Shaft:
- Remove the pinion nut using the appropriate wrench or socket.
- Use a chisel and hammer (if necessary) to loosen the pinion nut if it is stuck.
- Remove the pinion washer and lock washer.
- Support the pinion shaft and carefully tap it out using a soft-face hammer or drift punch.
5. Remove the Ring Gear:
- Remove the ring gear bolts or screws using the appropriate wrench or socket.
- Carefully lift the ring gear off the differential.
6. Inspect the Components:
- Inspect the old ring gear and pinion shaft for damage or wear.
- Replace any damaged or worn components with the new ones.
7. Install the New Ring Gear:
- Place the new ring gear onto the differential.
- Secure the ring gear with new bolts or screws, tightening them in a star pattern to avoid warping.
8. Install the New Pinion Shaft:
- Insert the new pinion shaft into the differential.
- Install the pinion washer and lock washer.
- Thread the pinion nut onto the shaft and tighten it securely.
9. Reassemble the Differential:
- Reinstall the differential cover using a new gasket or sealant to prevent leaks.
- Reattach the driveshaft to the differential flange and secure the bolts.
10. Add Differential Fluid:
- Add the recommended amount of new differential fluid to the differential through the fill plug.
11. Test Drive and Check Fluid Levels:
- Lower the vehicle and take it for a short test drive.
- Check the differential fluid level again and add more if necessary.
12. Final Checks:
- Inspect for any leaks from the differential cover or pinion seal.
- Ensure the driveshaft is properly secured to the differential flange and transmission.
Note:
Replacing the ring gear and pinion shaft requires precise measurements and adjustments. If you are unfamiliar with differential work or do not have the necessary tools and experience, it is advisable to consult with a professional mechanic to perform this task accurately and safely.
