- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench
- Allen key
- Flathead screwdriver
- Brake fluid
- Brake cleaner
- New brake pads
Instructions:
1. Prepare your car.
- Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- If your wheels are not already equipped with lug nut covers, use a socket wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels.
2. Raise your car.
- Place the jack under the front end of your car and raise it until the front wheels are off the ground.
- Secure the car in place by placing the jack stands under the car.
3. Remove the front wheels.
- Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and then pull the wheels off of the car.
4. Locate the brake calipers.
- The brake calipers are located on the inside of the front wheels.
- They are typically made of cast iron and have a red or black finish.
5. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
- Use the Allen key to remove the two bolts that hold the caliper in place.
- Be careful not to drop the bolts.
6. Remove the brake caliper.
- Once the bolts are removed, you can remove the caliper by lifting it off of the brake rotor.
7. Remove the old brake pads.
- The brake pads are located inside the caliper.
- Use the flathead screwdriver to pry the old brake pads out of the caliper.
- Be careful not to damage the caliper or the brake rotor.
8. Clean the brake caliper.
- Use the brake cleaner to clean the brake caliper and the brake rotor.
- Make sure to remove all of the old brake dust and debris.
9. Install the new brake pads.
- Place the new brake pads in the caliper.
- Make sure that the new pads are seated properly.
10. Reinstall the brake caliper.
- Reinstall the brake caliper and secure it with the bolts.
- Make sure that the bolts are tightened securely.
11. Reinstall the front wheels.
- Reinstall the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts.
- Do not fully tighten the lug nuts until after the car has been lowered.
12. Lower your car.
- Use the jack to lower the car until it is back on the ground.
13. Tighten the lug nuts.
- Use the socket wrench to tighten the lug nuts.
- Make sure that the lug nuts are tightened securely.
14. Test the brakes.
- Start your car and test the brakes by pressing on the brake pedal.
- The brakes should feel firm and responsive.
15. Check the brake fluid level.
- Open the hood of your car and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
- Check the fluid level and add more fluid if necessary.
16. Dispose of the old brake pads.
- Dispose of the old brake pads in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
