How to replace head gasket?

How To Replace a Blown Head Gasket

1. Disconnect the Battery

Before you start working, disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. This will prevent any electrical accidents from happening.

2. Drain the Coolant

Drain the coolant from your car's radiator. This will help prevent the engine from overheating when you remove the head gasket.

3. Remove the Intake Manifold

The intake manifold is the part of the engine that connects the carburetor or fuel injector to the engine block. Remove the intake manifold bolts and carefully lift the intake manifold off the engine block.

4. Remove the Exhaust Manifold

The exhaust manifold is the part of the engine that connects the engine block to the exhaust pipe. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts and carefully lift the exhaust manifold off the engine block.

5. Remove the Cylinder Head Bolts

The cylinder head bolts are the bolts that hold the cylinder head to the engine block. Remove the cylinder head bolts in the reverse order that they were tightened.

6. Lift Off the Cylinder Head

Once all of the cylinder head bolts have been removed, you can lift off the cylinder head. Be careful not to drop the cylinder head, as it is heavy.

7. Remove the Old Head Gasket

The old head gasket will be stuck to the surfaces of the cylinder head and engine block. Remove the old head gasket with a gasket scraper.

8. Clean the Cylinder Head and Engine Block

Clean the cylinder head and engine block with a solvent to remove any dirt or grease.

9. Install the New Head Gasket

Place the new head gasket on the cylinder head. Make sure that the gasket is properly aligned.

10. Install the Cylinder Head

Carefully lower the cylinder head onto the engine block. Make sure that the gasket is not damaged as you lower the cylinder head.

11. Install the Cylinder Head Bolts

Install the cylinder head bolts in the reverse order that they were removed. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque.

12. Reinstall the Intake Manifold

Reinstall the intake manifold. Tighten the intake manifold bolts to the specified torque.

13. Reinstall the Exhaust Manifold

Reinstall the exhaust manifold. Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts to the specified torque.

14. Refill the Coolant

Refill the coolant in your car's radiator.

15. Reconnect the Battery

Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

16. Test Drive the Car

Test drive the car to make sure that it is running properly.
