How do you remove the shift knob out of your 1995 Mercury Mystique?

To remove the shift knob from a 1995 Mercury Mystique, follow these steps:

1. Park your Mystique on a level surface, set the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

2. Locate the shift knob release button on the side of the shifter assembly. It’s usually a small plastic button or lever.

3. Press the shift knob release button and simultaneously pull up on the shift knob. It might be necessary to wiggle or twist it slightly while pulling upwards to assist with the removal process.

4. Once the shift knob is pulled up and off the shifter, you may need to remove the plastic trim piece or collar around the base of the shifter. This can usually be done by prying it up with a flat-head screwdriver or plastic trim removal tool.

5. Once the plastic trim piece or collar is removed, you will see the shift lever shaft. There will be a small metal retaining clip around the shaft. Use a flat-head screwdriver or snap ring pliers to remove the clip.

6. Once the clip is removed, the shift lever should come right off the shaft.

7. To re-install the shift knob, reverse the steps above:

- insert the shift lever into the shaft and secure the retaining clip

- re-install the plastic trim piece

- press down on the shift knob until it snaps back into place
