1. Gather the necessary tools and materials.
* Lug wrench
* Jack and jack stands
* Chock
* Spare tire
* Spare tire lug nuts (if they're not already attached to the spare tire)
* Owner's manual
2. Park the car on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
3. Chock the rear wheels.
This will help to prevent the car from rolling while you're changing the tire.
4. Jack up the car.
Use the jack to raise the car until the flat tire is off the ground.
5. Loosen the lug nuts.
Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Do not remove the lug nuts completely at this point.
6. Place the chock behind the front wheel that is still on the ground.
This will help to prevent the car from rolling while you're changing the tire.
7. Remove the lug nuts and take off the flat tire.
Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts completely and take off the flat tire.
8. Place the spare tire on the wheel hub.
Line up the spare tire with the wheel hub and carefully lower it into place.
9. Put the lug nuts back on.
Hand-tighten the lug nuts until they're snug.
10. Lower the car.
Use the jack to lower the car until it's back on the ground.
11. Tighten the lug nuts.
Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern. Tighten the lug nuts until they're snug, but do not over-tighten them.
12. Remove the chocks.
Remove the chocks from behind both rear wheels.
13. Lower the jack and put it away.
14. Test the spare tire.
Gently drive the car around the parking lot to test the spare tire. Make sure that it feels stable and secure.
15. Check the air pressure in the spare tire.
Make sure that the air pressure in the spare tire is the same as the recommended air pressure for your vehicle.
16. Replace the flat tire as soon as possible.
Have the flat tire repaired so that you can put it back on your car when you're finished using the spare tire.
