How do you replace the window regulator on 2003 volkswagen beetle convertible rear power window?

Parts Required:

- Window Regulator

- Power Window Switch (might need to be replaced when replacing the motor)

Tools Required

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Phillips-head screwdriver

- Socket wrench

- Extension bar

- 8mm socket

- 10mm socket

- T15 Torx bit

Instructions:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery.

Step 2: Remove the door panel screws:

- Begin by removing the door handle screws using the T15 Torx bit.

- There is a hidden screw located behind a small plug (with the VW emblem on it) to the right of the door handle. Using a flat-head screwdriver remove this plug and then unscrew the screw beneath.

- On the inner side of the door handle where the lock button sits there is a clip. With a flat-head screwdriver lift the clip and set it aside. Be sure not to lose the spring that is underneath the clip.

- With the flat screwdriver lift the side of the door panel from around the door release switch cover and work the screwdriver around the side of the panel, popping the panel off the retaining clips along the side.

- Repeat this step going all the way around the side and along the bottom of the panel until the entire panel has come off of all the retaining clips.

- Gently lift up the door panel so that the window glass can slide upwards.

- Behind the door panel and mounted on the door you will see a black vapor barrier. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver remove the three retaining screws that hold the barrier to the door. Set the screws aside and then place the barrier on the interior of the door panel for safe keeping.

Step 3: Disconnect the door electrical connector

- Pull down the rubber flap covering the connector

- Use a flat-head screwdriver to press down on the retaining clip on the electrical connector and pull the connector free from the door.

Step 4: Remove the window regulator motor:

- Using the 10mm socket and extension bar, loosen the three bolts holding the window regulator in place. Then remove them by hand.

- Remove the remaining 10mm bolt that holds the motor to the window regulator.

- Disconnect the electrical connector from the motor.

Step 5: Install the new window regulator in the reverse order:

- Plug in the electrical connection to the motor.

- Attach the motor to the window regulator using the 10mm bolt and secure the motor to the door frame using the three 10mm bolts removed earlier.

- Use the 8mm socket to bolt the window regulator into the door.

Step 6: Reinstall all of the previously removed components.

- Reinstall the exterior door panel to the door frame using your hands and fingers ensuring that all of the retaining clips are fully seated and secure.

- Reinstall the three screws that secure the vapor barrier with the Phillips screwdriver making sure that the vapor barrier is positioned correctly under the door panel as it was when originally removed.

- Reinstall the door release button spring, cover and clip and fasten the clip with a flat-head screwdriver.

- Reinstall the three screws that hold the door handle in place using the Torx bit.

- Replace the plug which covers the screw to the right of the door handle.

Step 7: Reconnect the battery and try the window to make sure it is functioning properly.
