Tools Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Pry bar
- Hammer
- Wheel bearing puller/hub disassembly tool
- Replacement wheel bearing assembly
- Grease
- Safety glasses
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Safety First:
- Engage the parking brake and chock the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel you're working on, but don't remove them completely.
2. Jack Up the Vehicle:
- Position the jack under the vehicle's designated jacking point, following your vehicle's owner's manual.
- Raise the vehicle until the wheel you're working on is off the ground.
- Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Wheel:
- Now, you can completely remove the lug nuts and take the wheel off.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper:
- Locate the caliper mounting bolts and remove them using a socket wrench.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor but leave it connected to the brake line.
- Hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire or string to prevent it from damaging the brake hose or line.
5. Remove the Brake Rotor:
- Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle.
- Slide the rotor off the hub.
6. Expose the Wheel Bearing:
- Remove the steering knuckle cotter pin and nut using a hammer and chisel or punch.
- Pull the steering knuckle/hub assembly off the axle to expose the wheel bearing.
7. Remove the Old Wheel Bearing:
- Use a wheel bearing puller or hub disassembly tool to remove the old wheel bearing from the hub assembly.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver and pry the bearing out, working around the circumference of the bearing to avoid damaging the hub.
8. Clean and Inspect:
- Clean the hub surface and bearing seat to remove any debris or old grease.
- Check for any signs of damage or wear on the hub. If the hub is damaged, it may also require replacement.
9. Install New Bearing:
- Pack the new bearing with high-temperature wheel bearing grease.
- Carefully insert the new bearing into the hub assembly.
- Press or tap the bearing into place, making sure it is seated properly.
10. Reassemble:
- Reinstall the steering knuckle/hub assembly onto the axle.
- Replace the cotter pin and nut, and secure it.
- Attach the brake rotor back onto the hub.
- Reinstall the caliper bracket and tighten the bolts.
- Reattach the brake caliper.
- Put the wheel back on and secure it with the lug nuts.
11. Torque Settings:
- Refer to your vehicle's repair manual for the proper torque specifications for the lug nuts, brake caliper bolts, and steering knuckle nut.
12. Lower the Vehicle:
- Slowly lower the vehicle using the jack.
13. Test Drive:
- Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure that the wheel bearing replacement was successful. Listen for any unusual noises or feel for any vibrations while driving.
Remember, working on vehicle components like brakes and bearings can be complex and requires proper knowledge, tools, and safety precautions. If you are not confident in performing these steps, it is best to consult with a certified mechanic or refer to your vehicle's service manual for more detailed instructions specific to your Saturn Vue model.
