How do you replace valve cover gaskets on a 1989 F350 5.8L V8 EFI?

Parts Needed

* New valve cover gaskets (2)

* RTV silicone sealant

* 5/16-inch wrench

* 3/8-inch wrench

* 7/16-inch wrench

Instructions

1. Remove the negative battery cable.

2. Locate the valve covers on top of the engine. They are the two large, rectangular covers on either side of the intake manifold.

3. Remove the bolts that hold the valve covers in place. There are four bolts on each valve cover.

4. Carefully remove the valve covers. Be careful not to drop the bolts into the engine.

5. Clean the old gasket material from the valve covers and the cylinder head.

6. Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone sealant to the mating surface of the valve covers.

7. Install the new valve cover gaskets.

8. Install the bolts that hold the valve covers in place. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft-lbs.

9. Connect the negative battery cable.

10. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks.

Tips

* If you are replacing the valve cover gaskets because the engine is leaking oil, it is a good idea to also replace the oil pan gasket.

* If you are using a sealant that requires a gasket maker, follow the instructions on the package carefully.

* Be careful not to over-tighten the bolts that hold the valve covers in place.
