Steps
1. Park the B2000 on level ground and apply the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow time for it to cool. Disconnect the battery to prevent sparking.
2. Drain the oil from the oil pan. Place an oil drain pan beneath the oil pan and remove the drain plug with a wrench. Allow all of the oil to drain out.
3. Locate the timing chain cover. It is located on the front of the engine. There are two 10mm bolts holding it in place. Remove the bolts with a wrench.
4. Set the engine to top dead center. To do this, turn the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise until the timing mark on the camshaft pulley is aligned with the index mark on the cylinder head.
5. Remove the timing chain cover. With the engine at top dead center, it’s time to remove the timing chain cover plate. This cover is typically metal or plastic and is held in place by several 10mm bolts. Once all the bolts are removed, you can lift the cover off.
6. Remove the old timing chain. Inspect the chain and sprockets for wear or damage. If they are damaged, they will need to be replaced.
7. Install the new timing chain. Make sure that the timing marks on the chain align with the marks on the sprockets. Insert the chain over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, then install the tensioner and the idler pulley.
8. Reinstall the timing chain cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated and snugly fit the timing chain cover against the engine block. Tighten the mounting bolts in a star pattern.
9. Put in new oil. Remove the oil filter and replace it with a new one. Pour new oil into the engine through the oil filler hole until the dipstick reads "Full."
10. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check for any leaks.
Tips
- Use the correct tools for the job. This will make the process easier and prevent damage to the engine.
- Be careful of hot oil when draining it from the oil pan.
- If you are not comfortable doing this job yourself, take your vehicle to a mechanic.
