How do you prepare the head surfaces when replacing a gasket?

1. Clean off old gasket material

- Use a gasket scraper and gasket solvent.

- Make sure all old pieces will not drop and block oil ways or coolant ports, especially inside passages.

2. Check the surfaces

- Look over and check the sealing areas for flatness on both the cylinder deck and cylinder heads or head surfaces.

- Use a straight edge for inspecting straightness and feeler gauges to measure if there may be warpage. There shouldn't be gaps larger than 0.006in or 0.15mm.

- If it needs machining take them to an auto or engine machine shop or purchase all new pieces.

3. Remove any dirt & oil deposits

- Using an aerosol solvent for carbon-deposits or dirt or brake clean spray or acetone.
