How do you replace the spark plugs in a 1996 Chevy Lumina APV 3.4?

Tools Needed

- Spark plug socket wrench

- 5/8-inch ratchet

- Spark plug gap tool (optional)

- New spark plugs

Instructions

1. Remove the engine cover.

Disconnect the negative terminal of the car’s battery. This is a safety precaution to make sure no current is going through the engine. This is also a good time to let the engine cool down, in case the car was previously running. Once safely cooled, remove the plastic engine cover. This will allow access to the spark plug wires and spark plugs.

2. Remove the spark plug wires.

Use the 5/8-inch ratchet to remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Be careful not to pull the wires too hard, as this could damage the wires or the spark plugs.

3. Remove the spark plugs.

Use the spark plug wrench to remove the spark plugs from the engine.

4. Gap the new spark plugs.

If the new spark plugs are not pre-gapped, you will need to gap them before installing them. To gap a spark plug, insert the feeler gauge between the center electrode and the ground electrode. The feeler gauge should read 0.045 inches. If it does not, use the gap tool to adjust the spark plug gap.

5. Install the new spark plugs.

Screw the new spark plugs into the engine by hand. Do not use a ratchet or power tool to install the spark plugs, as this could damage the spark plugs or the engine.

6. Reinstall the spark plug wires.

Reattach the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Push down on the wires until they snap into place.

7. Reinstall the engine cover.

Reconnect the negative terminal of the car’s battery.

8. Test the engine.

Start the engine and check for any leaks or unusual sounds. If everything seems fine, take your car for a spin around the block to make sure the engine is running smoothly.

Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the spark plugs in your 1996 Chevy Lumina APV 3.4.
