1. Gather the necessary tools and materials:
- A jack and jack stands
- A Phillips-head screwdriver
- A flat-head screwdriver
- A 10mm wrench
- A pair of pliers
2. Prepare the vehicle:
- Park your Tacoma on a level surface.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Engage the transmission into first gear (manual) or park (automatic).
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
3. Lift the vehicle:
- Use the jack and jack stands to lift the rear of the vehicle until the tires are off the ground.
4. Locate the emergency brake cable:
- The emergency brake cable is located underneath the vehicle, near the rear axle.
5. Loosen the cable clamp:
- Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the bolt that secures the cable clamp to the frame.
- Do not remove the bolt completely.
6. Tighten the cable adjuster:
- Locate the cable adjuster near the cable clamp. It is a small metal nut with a screwdriver slot.
- Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to turn the adjuster clockwise to tighten the cable.
7. Test the emergency brake:
- Lower the vehicle, release the parking brake, and test the emergency brake.
- The brake should engage firmly when you pull the lever up.
8. Re-tighten the cable clamp:
- Use the 10mm wrench to re-tighten the cable clamp bolt.
9. Repeat for the other side:
- If your Tacoma has rear drum brakes, repeat steps 4-8 for the other side.
Be sure to lower the vehicle safely after completing the adjustment. Test the emergency brake a few times to make sure it is working properly before driving.
