How do you replace the fuel pump on a 1986 Pontiac Fiero 2.5?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement fuel pump

- Fuel line wrench

- Screwdriver

- Flathead screwdriver

- Socket set

- Pliers

- Safety glasses

- Gloves

- Rags

- Gasoline-resistant sealant

- Drain pan

- Jack and jack stands

- Safety goggles

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.

2. Allow the engine to cool down completely.

3. Engage the parking brake.

4. Jack up the rear of the vehicle using jack stands placed under the frame.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

1. Locate the negative battery terminal.

2. Loosen the nut or bolt securing the cable to the terminal using a wrench.

3. Remove the cable from the terminal and set it aside.

Step 3: Relieve Fuel System Pressure

1. Locate the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

2. Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator.

3. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. This will relieve the pressure in the fuel system.

Step 4: Drop the Fuel Tank

1. Locate the fuel tank straps on the underside of the vehicle.

2. Using a wrench, loosen the bolts holding the fuel tank straps in place.

3. Lower the fuel tank just enough to access the fuel pump.

Step 5: Disconnect the Fuel Lines

1. Disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel pump.

2. Disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel pump.

Step 6: Remove the Fuel Pump

1. Remove the bolts securing the fuel pump to the fuel tank.

2. Remove the fuel pump from the tank.

Step 7: Install the New Fuel Pump

1. Insert the new fuel pump into the fuel tank.

2. Secure the fuel pump with the removed bolts.

3. Make sure to insert the fuel pump hanger securely into the tank as well.

4. Apply gasoline-resistant sealant around the base of the fuel pump.

Step 8: Reconnect the Fuel Lines

1. Reconnect the fuel supply line to the fuel pump.

2. Reconnect the fuel return line to the fuel pump.

Step 9: Raise the Fuel Tank

1. Raise the fuel tank back into position.

2. Secure the fuel tank straps with the removed bolts.

Step 10: Reconnect the Negative Battery Cable

1. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal.

2. Tighten the nut or bolt securing the cable to the terminal.

Step 11: Test the Fuel System

1. Turn on the ignition switch and listen for the fuel pump to prime the system.

2. Start the engine and check for any leaks.

Step 12: Cleanup

1. Clean up any spilled fuel.

2. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
