Instructions
Step 1: Safety Precautions
- Turn off the engine and make sure it has cooled down.
-Engage the parking brake. Use the wheel chocks to prevent the car from rolling.
-Wear safety glasses and gloves.
Step 2: Jacking the Car
- Jack the front end of your Miata and support it on jack stands.
-Loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, then remove them.
-Take off the front wheels.
Step 3: Removing the Transmission
-Remove the transmission crossmember
-Unbolt the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission input shaft housing and use a piece of wire or zip tie to hold it to a nearby mounting point to keep it from hanging freely.
- Disconnect the transmission ground wire.
- Remove the transmission speedometer sensor harness.
- If applicable, unbolt the starter from the transmission and move it aside
- Remove the driveshaft from the transmission and move it aside.
- Remove the transmission input shaft housing bolts and remove the input shaft housing and oil seal from the transmission.
Step 4: Removing the Clutch
-Remove the clutch release lever with a 12 mm socket.
-Remove the six bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel using a 14mm socket.
-Remove the clutch disk and pressure plate.
Step 5: Inspect the Flywheel
-Inspect the flywheel for signs of wear or damage. If necessary, resurface the flywheel using a flywheel resurfacer.
Step 6: Install the New Clutch
- Position the new clutch disc on the flywheel.
-Install the pressure plate over the clutch disc. Align the pressure plate with the dowel pins on the flywheel.
-Install the six bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
-Install the clutch release lever. Tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
Step 7: Reinstall the Transmission
- Reinstall the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Reinstall the starter, if applicable.
-Reinstall the transmission ground wire.
-Reinstall the speedometer housing and input shaft housing to the transmission and reconnect the speed sensor.
-Reinstall the clutch slave cylinder to the transmission input shaft housing.
-Reinstall the transmission crossmember.
-Reinstall the front tires and lug nuts, and lower the car
Step 8: Bleed the Clutch Hydraulic System
- Bleed the clutch hydraulic system to remove air from the lines.
- Connect a hose to the clutch master cylinder bleeder screw and open it.
- Have an assistant depress the clutch pedal while you observe the fluid flowing from the bleeder screw.
- Close the bleeder screw when the fluid is free of bubbles.
Step 9: Test the Clutch
- Start the engine and let it warm up.
- Shift into gear and release the clutch pedal slowly. The car should move smoothly without any jerking or slipping.
Step 10: Road Test
-Take the car for a road test to make sure that the clutch is working properly.
-Drive in different gears and at different speeds.
-If the clutch is slipping or making any unusual noises, then you may need to take it to a mechanic.
