1. Gather Tools and Materials:
- New brake pads (specific to your vehicle model)
- C-clamp or brake caliper tool
- Box wrench or ratchet set
- Socket wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Safety glasses and gloves
2. Prepare the Car:
- Park your car on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
- Chock the wheels to prevent the car from rolling.
3. Locate the Brake Calipers:
- The brake calipers are located on the wheels, where the brake pads contact the rotors.
4. Remove the Wheel:
- Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that needs its brake pads replaced.
- Jack up the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame for safety.
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
5. Remove the Brake Caliper:
- Locate the two bolts holding the brake caliper to the steering knuckle.
- Use the socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts.
- Be cautious as the caliper may fall off once the bolts are removed, so support it with one hand.
6. Remove the Old Brake Pads:
- Once the caliper is removed, you can see the old brake pads seated in the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake pads out of their slots.
7. Clean the Caliper Bracket:
- Use a wire brush to clean any rust or debris from the caliper bracket where the brake pads sit.
8. Install the New Brake Pads:
- Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are properly seated and aligned.
- Make sure the brake pad with the wear indicator is installed on the inboard side.
9. Reinstall the Brake Caliper:
- Place the brake caliper back onto the steering knuckle and align the bolt holes.
- Use the socket wrench to reinstall and tighten the caliper bolts.
10. Replace the Wheel:
- Reinstall the wheel, lug nuts, and tighten them securely using the lug wrench.
11. Brake Fluid Check:
- Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. If it's low, add brake fluid of the recommended type and within safe fill lines.
12. Test the Brakes:
- Pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.
- Take the car for a test drive at low speeds to ensure that the brakes are working correctly.
Note:
- Replace brake pads in pairs (left and right) for balanced braking performance.
- It is important to follow proper safety procedures when working with brakes. Always wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself.
- If you are uncomfortable performing this task, it's best to consult a professional mechanic for assistance.
