- Basic tools (socket set, pliers, screwdriver, jack stands)
- New brake pads and rotors (if necessary)
- Brake fluid
- C-clamp or brake tool
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Ensure that the vehicle is secure before proceeding.
2. Loosen the lug nuts of the wheel on the side where you'll be changing the brake pads. Do not remove them completely.
3. Raise your vehicle using a jack and place jack stands under the frame to support the vehicle. Make sure the vehicle is stable before continuing.
4. Remove the wheel by fully unscrewing the lug nuts.
5. Locate the brake caliper. It is the metal housing that contains the brake pads and piston.
6. Use a screwdriver or pry tool to remove the retaining clip that holds the brake pads in place. Once removed, slide out the old brake pads.
7. Inspect the brake rotors. If they are excessively scored or damaged, they will need to be replaced. If they are in good condition, you can move on to the next step.
8. Use the C-clamp or brake tool to compress the brake piston. Turn the tool clockwise to compress the piston back into its housing. This makes room for the new brake pads.
9. Install the new brake pads. Make sure they fit snugly and are properly aligned.
10. Secure the brake pads by reinstalling the retaining clip or pin.
11. Repeat the above steps on the other side of the vehicle if needed.
12. Top up the brake fluid in the master cylinder if necessary.
13. Test the brakes before driving. Pump the brake pedal to ensure that the brakes work properly.
14. Replace the wheel and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts securely.
15. Lower the vehicle carefully and remove the jack stands.
Your brake pads should now be replaced. However, it's important to note that brake repairs can be complex and should be done carefully. If you are unsure about any of these steps, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic. Brake maintenance is crucial for ensuring the safety of your vehicle and its occupants.
