Procedure:
1. Prepare your vehicle by parking it on a level surface and engaging the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it time to cool. Ensure that the engine is completely cool to prevent burns. If the engine is warm, the oil will be hot, and you may burn yourself.
2. Locate the oil filter. On a 1997 Nissan pickup, the oil filter is located on the bottom side of the engine. It is a cylindrical-shaped object with a black cap.
3. Place the oil pan underneath the oil filter to catch any dripping oil.
4. Using an oil filter wrench, loosen the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. Be careful not to spill any oil.
5. Remove the oil filter and inspect the gasket for damage. If the gasket is damaged, replace it with a new one.
6. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help create a seal and prevent leaks.
7. Screw the new oil filter in by hand until it is snug. Do not overtighten the oil filter.
8. Add new oil to the engine using the funnel. Refer to the owner’s manual to find out how much oil your truck takes.
9. Replace the oil cap and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check the oil level and add more if necessary.
10. Monitor for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil filter or replace the gasket.
