Necessary Tools:
1. Flat-blade screwdriver
2. Philips-head screwdriver
3. Socket set
4. Pliers
5. New ignition key cylinder assembly (with keys)
Instructions:
1. Disconnect Battery:
- Open the vehicle's hood.
- Locate the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Loosen the nut securing the negative terminal using the appropriate wrench or socket.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable by removing it from the terminal post.
2. Remove Steering Wheel Cover:
- Turn the steering wheel to align one of its spokes vertically.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry open the lower steering wheel cover at the spoke position.
- Remove the lower cover by pulling it downward.
- Repeat the process on the opposite side.
3. Remove Clockspring Cover:
- Remove the two Philips-head screws securing the clockspring cover.
- Carefully lift the clockspring cover and set it aside.
4. Disconnect Wires:
- You will see a small wire harness connected to the ignition key cylinder.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to lift and disconnect the locking lever harness connector from the ignition switch assembly.
- Disconnect the other wire harnesses connected to the ignition switch.
5. Remove Ignition Lock Cylinder:
- Insert your vehicle key into the ignition switch.
- Turn the key to the "ON" position.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to insert into the small access hole on the side of the ignition lock cylinder.
- Slide the screwdriver further in until you feel a click or movement, indicating the release of the lock mechanism.
- Pull out the key and ignition cylinder assembly.
6. Transfer Key:
- Take note of how the key is oriented when inserted into the ignition lock cylinder.
- Remove the key from the old cylinder.
- Insert the key into the new cylinder in the same orientation.
7. Install New Cylinder:
- Insert the new ignition lock cylinder assembly back into the steering column.
- Insert the key and turn it a couple of times to ensure the cylinder is properly seated.
8. Reconnect Wires:
- Reattach the wire harnesses that you disconnected earlier.
- Make sure the locking lever harness connector is securely fastened.
9. Reinstall Clockspring Cover:
- Position the clockspring cover and secure it using the two Philips-head screws.
10. Reattach Steering Wheel Cover:
- Align the lower steering wheel cover with its posts.
- Press it into place until it snaps shut.
- Repeat the process on the opposite side.
11. Reconnect Battery:
- Reinstall the negative (-) battery cable onto its terminal post.
- Tighten the securing nut.
12. Test Ignition:
- Insert the key into the newly installed ignition key cylinder and turn it.
- The engine should start normally, indicating a successful replacement of the ignition key cylinder.
