You do need to take the transfer case out to replace the clutch in a Nissan pickup 4x4.

Here are the steps involved:

1. Park the truck on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Disconnect the battery.

3. Remove the skid plate under the engine.

4. Remove the driveshaft.

5. Remove the transmission mount.

6. Support the transmission with a jack.

7. Remove the crossmember.

8. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder.

9. Remove the transmission bell housing bolts.

10. Slide the transmission back until it is clear of the clutch.

11. Replace the clutch disk and pressure plate.

12. Reinstall the transmission bell housing and bolts.

13. Connect the clutch slave cylinder.

14. Reinstall the crossmember.

15. Install the transmission mount.

16. Reinstall the driveshaft.

17. Reinstall the skid plate under the engine.

18. Reconnect the battery.

19. Test drive the truck.
