To repair a tilt steering column in a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire, follow these steps:

1.Disconnect the battery.

This is a safety precaution to prevent the airbag from accidentally deploying.

2. Remove the steering wheel.

To do this, you will need to:

-Remove the four screws that hold the steering wheel in place.

-Pull the steering wheel straight towards you to remove it from the shaft.

-Disconnect the electrical connectors that are attached to the steering wheel.

3. Remove the tilt steering column cover.

There are four screws that hold the cover in place. Remove the screws and then lift the cover off.

4. Locate the tilt steering column pins.

The tilt steering column pins are located on the bottom of the steering column. There are two pins on each side of the column.

5. Remove the old pins.

Use a pair of pliers to pull the old pins out of the steering column.

6. Install the new pins.

Insert the new pins into the steering column. Make sure that the pins are seated properly.

7. Reinstall the tilt steering column cover.

Place the cover back on the steering column and then secure it with the four screws.

8. Reinstall the steering wheel.

To do this, you will need to:

-Connect the electrical connectors that are attached to the steering wheel.

-Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft.

-Secure the steering wheel with the four screws.

9.Reconnect the battery.

Test the tilt steering column to make sure that it is working properly.
