Replacing a Thrown Rod on a Ford Probe SE

Tools and materials:

* Replacement connecting rod

* Connecting rod bolts

* Piston ring compressor

* Piston ring expander

* Oil pan gasket

* Oil filter

* Engine coolant

* Motor oil

* Assembly lube

* Torque wrench

* Socket set

* Wrench set

Instructions:

1. Prepare the engine.

* Allow the engine to cool down completely.

* Drain the engine oil.

* Remove the radiator cap to relieve pressure.

* Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

2. Remove the oil pan.

* Place an oil pan under the engine to catch any remaining oil.

* Remove the oil pan bolts and carefully lower the oil pan.

* Scrape off any old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.

3. Remove the connecting rod.

* Locate the connecting rod that has been thrown.

* Remove the connecting rod bolts and carefully remove the connecting rod from the engine block.

* Remove the old piston ring from the piston.

4. Install the new connecting rod.

* Apply assembly lube to the new connecting rod bearing.

* Place the connecting rod in the piston and install the new connecting rod bolts.

* Tighten the connecting rod bolts to the specified torque.

5. Install the new oil pan.

* Apply a new layer of oil pan gasket maker to the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.

* Carefully install the oil pan and secure it with the oil pan bolts.

* Tighten the oil pan bolts to the specified torque.

6. Replace the engine oil filter.

* Locate the engine oil filter and remove it using an oil filter wrench.

* Apply a thin layer of new engine oil to the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it on by hand until it is snug.

* Tighten the oil filter with an oil filter wrench until it is snug.

7. Reinstall the radiator cap.

* Reconnect the battery negative terminal.

8. Refill the engine oil and coolant.

* Add new engine oil to the engine until it reaches the full mark on the dipstick.

* Add new engine coolant to the radiator until it reaches the full mark on the reservoir.

9. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

* Check for any leaks from the oil pan or the connecting rod.

10. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.

* Check the engine oil level and coolant level and add more if necessary.

Note:

* Replacing a thrown rod is a complex and time-consuming repair. It is recommended that this repair be performed by a qualified mechanic.

* If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair, you can take your vehicle to a mechanic and have it repaired.
