Tools and Materials Needed:
- Oil pump replacement kit (Includes new oil pump, gasket, and hardware)
- Oil filter
- New engine oil (Refer to your owner's manual for recommended type and quantity)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Basic hand tools (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers)
- Jack and jack stands (for safety)
Steps:
1. Safety First:
- Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, engaged in Park (for automatic transmission), and the engine is completely cool to prevent burns.
2. Preparation:
- Jack up the vehicle and support it safely using jack stands.
3. Oil Drain:
- Place the oil drain pan beneath the oil pan of the vehicle.
- Locate and remove the oil drain plug (usually a 17mm bolt).
- Let the old oil drain completely into the pan.
4. Remove Oil Pan:
- Once the oil has drained, locate the oil pan bolts. These bolts hold the oil pan in place.
- Remove these bolts and carefully remove the oil pan, taking care not to spill any remaining oil.
5. Remove the Old Oil Pump:
- Locate the oil pump at the front of the engine. It is typically held in place by several bolts.
- Remove these bolts and carefully remove the old oil pump.
6. Clean Surfaces:
- Before installing the new oil pump, thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and oil pan to remove any old gasket material or debris.
7. Transfer Oil Pump Pickup Tube:
- If the replacement kit does not include a new oil pickup tube, transfer the old tube from the old pump to the new pump.
8. Install the New Oil Pump:
- Position the new oil pump into place and secure it with the bolts you removed earlier.
- Make sure the oil pump is properly seated.
9. Install a New Oil Pan Gasket:
- Place a new oil pan gasket on the mating surface of the oil pan. Ensure you have the correct gasket for your vehicle.
10. Reinstall the Oil Pan:
- Carefully lift and align the oil pan with the gasket, then secure it with the bolts you removed earlier.
11. Replace Oil Filter:
- Locate the oil filter (often near the top of the engine) and unscrew the old filter.
- Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the gasket of the new filter and screw it in by hand until it's snug. Avoid over-tightening.
12. Refill with New Oil:
- Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new oil as per your vehicle's specifications.
13. Start the Engine:
- Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check for any leaks.
14. Recheck Oil Level:
- Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes. Then use the dipstick to verify that the oil level is within the recommended range.
15. Clean Up:
- Discard the old oil and filter properly. Clean any spilled oil from the engine or surrounding areas.
16. Test Drive:
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive to monitor for proper oil pressure and any unusual sounds or leaks.
_Remember that replacing an oil pump can be a complex task, so if you're not comfortable performing this repair yourself, it's best to consult with a professional mechanic for assistance._
