1. Connect the scan tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port. This is usually located under the dashboard, on the driver's side.
2. Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position, but do not start the engine.
3. Select "Engine" from the scan tool menu.
4. Select "Diagnostic Trouble Codes."
5. Read the fault codes that are displayed. These codes will tell you what problem caused the check engine light to turn on.
6. Select "Clear Trouble Codes."
7. Turn off the ignition key, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
8. Start the engine. The check engine light should now be turned off.
9. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the problem has been resolved.
If the check engine light comes back on, you will need to take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
