1. Gather your tools and materials.
- Replacement alternator (ACDelco 334-1107 or equivalent)
- 10mm socket wrench
- 12mm socket wrench
- 15mm socket wrench
- Ratchet
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Wire brush
2. Disconnect the battery.
- This is an essential safety precaution to prevent any electrical shocks. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal of the battery using the 10mm socket wrench.
3. Remove the serpentine belt.
- Locate the serpentine belt, which is the long belt that runs around the engine and powers various accessories.
- Use the 15mm socket wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and release the tension on the belt.
- Remove the belt by hand or pry it off the pulleys with a flat-head screwdriver.
4. Disconnect the alternator wiring.
- Follow the wiring harness from the alternator to find the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.
- Loosen the bolts holding the wires to the terminals using the 12mm socket wrench.
- Disconnect the wires from the terminals and set them aside.
5. Remove the old alternator.
- Use the 12mm socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the alternator to the engine.
- Carefully lift the alternator out from the engine bay.
6. Prepare the new alternator.
- Compare the new alternator to the old one to ensure they are similar in size and mounting configuration.
- If necessary, transfer the mounting brackets and other components from the old alternator to the new one.
7. Install the new alternator.
- Position the new alternator in place against the engine.
- Secure the alternator to the engine with the bolts removed in step 5.
8. Reconnect the alternator wiring.
- Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) wires to the corresponding terminals on the alternator and tighten the bolts.
9. Reinstall the serpentine belt.
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys in its correct position.
- Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt to secure the belt.
10. Reconnect the battery.
- Connect the negative (-) terminal of the battery to the battery post.
11. Start the engine and test.
- Start the vehicle and confirm that the alternator is charging the battery. You can check this using a multimeter.
12. Clean the terminals and connections.
- Use a wire brush to clean the battery terminals, alternator terminals, and any other electrical connections you disconnected during this process. This helps prevent corrosion.
