How do you replace 1983 ford bronco brake pads and rotors?

Tools and Materials:

Vehicle lift or ramps

Lug wrench

Socket set

Ratchet

Pry bar

Hammer

Brake cleaner

New brake pads and rotors

Caliper grease

Jack the front or rear of the Bronco (whichever end you’re working on) until the tire is suspended about six inches off the ground. Using the lug wrench, remove the lug nuts and pull off the tire. Now you can see the rotor, brake caliper and brake pads. It’s a good opportunity to use some brake cleaner to remove dirt, grease and debris that may have built up.

Locate the two bolts holding the caliper in place. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts and lift off the caliper assembly. You don’t have to disconnect the caliper from the brake line, just rest it out of the way on a stack of old magazines or cardboard boxes.

The rotor should be exposed. To remove the rotor, use a hammer to lightly tap it with the hammer until it pops loose from the hub. Be careful not to damage the rotor. If it’s difficult to remove, use some penetrating oil to loosen it.

Take a close look at the old brake pads. If they’re extremely thin or worn unevenly, or if there’s visible damage to the rotor, you’ll need to replace the brake pads and rotor as well.

To replace the brake pads, slide them into the caliper. Make sure they’re properly aligned and fully inserted. You may need to use a pry bar to spread the caliper slightly in order to insert the brake pads.

Put the caliper assembly back on the rotor and secure it with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts until they’re snug.

Don’t forget to put a little dab of caliper grease on the caliper slides for smooth movement of the caliper assembly.

Put the tire back on and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle from the lift or ramps.

Repeat the process for the other side.

Test out your new brake pads and rotors to make sure they work properly. Brake pads and rotors are an important part of the vehicle’s braking system. Be sure to replace them as needed to keep yourself safe on the road.
