1. Park your vehicle in a safe location and apply the parking brake.
2. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool down.
3. Open the hood of your vehicle.
4. Locate the distributor cap. It is usually a black or gray plastic cover located near the front of the engine.
5. Remove the distributor cap by turning it counterclockwise and lifting it off.
6. Locate the rotor button. It is a small, round plastic piece that is connected to the distributor shaft.
7. Place a timing light on the number one spark plug wire.
8. Start the engine and let it idle.
9. Point the timing light at the timing marks on the harmonic balancer. The timing marks are usually a series of notches or lines on the balancer.
10. Adjust the distributor until the timing marks align with the pointer on the timing cover.
11. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to secure the distributor in place.
12. Replace the distributor cap and reconnect the spark plug wires.
13. Start the engine and check the timing again to make sure it is correct.
14. Close the hood of your vehicle.
