How do you replace the front break rotors on a 1988 Mercedes 420 sel?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Jack and jack stands

- Lug wrench

- Socket wrench set

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Caliper winding tool

- New brake rotors

- Brake pads (if needed)

- Brake fluid

- Safety glasses

- Gloves

Instructions:

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with the lug wrench, but do not remove them completely.

3. Jack up the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame for safety.

4. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.

5. Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry open the cotter pin that holds the brake caliper in place.

6. Remove the cotter pin and then use the socket wrench to loosen and remove the two bolts that hold the caliper in place.

7. Carefully lift the caliper off of the rotor. Be careful not to damage the brake fluid line.

8. Use the caliper winding tool to compress the piston back into the caliper. This will make it easier to install the new rotor.

9. Place the new rotor on the hub and then reinstall the caliper.

10. Tighten the caliper bolts and then reinstall the cotter pin.

11. Repeat steps 5-10 on the other side of the vehicle.

12. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.

13. Test the brakes to make sure they are working properly.

Note: If the brake pads are also worn out, you will need to replace them at the same time as the rotors.
